• Sheikh Nawaf al-Bashir, the head of the large Baqara tribe in Syria’s eastern governate of Deir Ezzour and a prominent opponent of President Assad, has been killed after being tortured, Syria’s council of tribes has said, al-Arabiya reports. But one Syrian activist said that the news is being disputed. Bashir was arrested in late July, hours after telling Reuters he was trying to stop armed resistance in the face of a military assault.
